Academia Sinica Research Award for Junior Research Investigators

This award is to encourage young domestic scholars to conduct in-depth research of significant contributions. Interested applicants are to submit their applications between mid-August and early October via the Academia Sinica website. This award is divided into three groups: mathematics and physical sciences, life sciences, humanities and social sciences. A maximum of five awards are given out each year to each group. The winner is awarded a prize of NT$200,000, a research grant of NT$300,000, and a medal.

Academia Sinica Short-Term Visiting Program for Domestic Scholars

Academia Sinica accepts applications for this reward twice a year to enhance academic exchanges with domestic colleges, universities, and academic institutions. Applicants can apply for short-term visit or participation in research work at Academia Sinica at the end of April and at the end of October.

Eligibility: Applicants must have a position of assistant professor or higher, have been a full-time lecturer for two years or more at a domestic public or private college/university, or is an attending physician at a teaching hospital engaged in research work for two years or more.

Academia Sinica Academicians

Academia Sinica Academicians are elected from persons with outstanding academic achievements in the country, who have:

(1) Distinguished publications, inventions or contributions in a specialty field.

(2) Over five years of leadership with eminent accomplishments at a research or academic institution.

The academicians are elected every two years at the Convocation of Academicians from the following 4 research groups: mathematics and physical sciences, Engineering Sciences, Life Sciences, and Humanities and Social Sciences. Each election has a maximum of 30 openings, with a maximum of 10 people for each group.

Academician candidates are nominated by at least 5 universities, renowned academies, research agencies/facilities, academicians, or review committee members and sent to the Academia Sinica for review.

National Chair Professorship of the Ministry of Education

The Ministry of Education established the National Chair Professorship to promote and reward academic research, improve teaching and research quality, and to encourage universities to develop their specialties. Five categories are installed based on academic fields, including humanities and arts, social science, mathematics and natural science, biology and medical and agricultural science, and engineering and applied science. The National Chair Professorship is awarded to a maximum of 13 persons each year. The professorship is set for a period of three years with an annual grant of NT$1 million which is allocated annually.

The Exploration Research Award of Pan Wen Yuan Foundation

The award encourages domestic researchers specialized in electronics, information and communications, and other related fields to engage in short-term studies (no longer than two months) at internationally renowned academic or research institutions in order to enhance their own expertise and R&D potential. Domestic faculty members or researchers who received their doctor’s degree less than five years ago (or are under 35 years old) can be recommended by their affiliated organizations for application.

Ta-You Wu Memorial Award

NSTC Ta-You Wu Memorial Award
To cultivate young researchers, reward academic elite of the future for engaging in academic research and continuing to improve their academic performance in the long-term, and commemorate Mr. Ta-You Wu for is contribution to scientific and technology research, academic departments of the NSTC select candidates from principal investigators of research projects that year, the review meeting convened by the deputy minister of the NSTC decides on the list of award winners, which is then submitted to the minister for approval in accordance with the Directions for Selecting Winners of the Ta-You Wu Memorial Award. In principle, 45 award winners are selected each year, and each individual may only win the award once. Award winners will not only receive a medal and lump-sum prize of NT$300,000 from the NSTC, but may also propose a Ta-You Wu Memorial Award Research Project according to their academic career plans and regulations of the NSTC.
In addition Article 5 of the directions, subsidies for the aforementioned project will be handled according to the National Science and Technology Council Project Subsidy Guidelines.

8.National Science and Technology Council Outstanding Research Award

The award rewards outstanding science and technology talents who have dedicated themselves for years to the fields of basic or applied research to enhance the academic research level of Taiwan and its academic significance in the world. The award also rewards those who have facilitated the development of our society and industries, and individuals who have shown the values of scientific research, strengthening the technological capabilities of Taiwan. According to the NSTC Outstanding Research Award Selection Guidelines, the applicants shall apply within the timeframe stipulated by the NSTC. The award is categorized as basic research and applied research. The academic scholars of the NSTC select a total of 80 winners from the applicants every year. Furthermore, the Ministry of Science and Technology Active Selection Mechanism was added in 2022, selecting up to 4 winners every year. Winners may not apply again for three years from August 1 of the winning year. Winners shall receive a NT$900,000 reward presented by the NSTC and certificates. Applicants may only apply for the Outstanding Research Award once in the same year and may only be awarded up to two times. Those who have won two Outstanding Research Awards may apply to projects for NSTC research fellows in accordance with the guidelines for the 3-year special research projects funded by the NSTC.

9.Project for National Science and Technology Council Research Fellows

This project was established to encourage research fellows to engage in long-term, frontier research to facilitate Taiwan’s technological development and enhance our technological levels and international academic standing. Eligible applicants can submit applications before the due dates set by the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) according to the implementation guidelines for the program. A monthly grant of NT$30,000 is allocated to the project’s principle investigator during project period. Each investigator can be granted this project twice at most. In addition, completion of a three-year Outstanding Scholar Research Project is equivalent to the completion of one Project for NSTC Research Fellows. Certain cases are exempt from this restriction if stipulated in the guidelines, although the overall period of project implementation should not exceed six years. Researchers who have conducted the Project for NSTC Research Follows, the Outstanding Scholar Research Project, or other major projects specified in the guidelines for a total of six years or more, shall be awarded a medal of outstanding research fellowship by NSTC.

The Phi Tau Phi Scholastic Honor Society of the Republic of China – Outstanding Achievement Award

To recognize individuals with outstanding achievements, the Phi Tau Phi Scholastic Honor Society gives the Outstanding Achievement Award to scholars nominated by each local chapter or selected by the board each year. The award is presented annually to a maximum of three people, and candidates are reviewed by the board. Winners are awarded a gold trophy that bears the society emblem.
