Basic weekly teaching hours: 8 hours for professors; 9 hours for associate and assistant professors; and 10 hours for lecturers. During the time when the Ministry of Education processes the ruling of cases of dismissal, discontinuation of employment, or suspension, the relevant faculty member is prohibited from giving classes, unless otherwise approved by the curriculum meeting of the college (including graduate institute and degree program) and signed by the Dean of Academic Affairs. Faculty members who fail to fulfill their basic weekly teaching hours should make up the difference within the following academic year. Teaching hours that are not fulfilled will accumulate until they are made up.
The method for calculating teaching hours is as follows:
One hour for teaching each class; 30 minutes for each experiment or internship class; one hour or up to two hours for each service course; one hour for writing advising; one hour or up to three hours for special-topic research; one hour or up to three hours for special-topic discussion. Hours for team-taught classes using the rotational model are calculated according to the ratio of the instructors’ actual teaching time. For team-taught classes using the interactive model where all instructors are required to be present at each lecture, hours are granted according to actual attendance, and the total hours granted should be less than three times the number of course credits.
If the total calculated time above exceeds the basic weekly teaching hours requirement, an hourly fee will be approved and paid in accordance with the NTU Full-Time Faculty Weekly Teaching Hours Calculation Standards and Extra Teaching Hours Hourly Fee Approval and Payment Guidelines. If basic teaching hours are not fulfilled, the time of advising and thesis advising will be added to the basic teaching hours depending on the situation; however, this time will not exceed four hours.
