Curated by Taiwan Design Corner, this exhibition traces the evolution of British design—from the landmark Great Exhibition at the Crystal Palace and the transformative Arts and Crafts Movement to the pioneering corporate identities of the London Underground. The exhibition highlights the global impact of British visual culture, exported through the sophisticated imagery of publications like The Illustrated London News. Furthermore, through the founding of international organizations such as ICSID and ICOGRADA, Britain propelled design toward professional institutionalization, setting the global benchmark for public service and cultural capital. In the spirit of "Observing the Waves to Seek the Source," this exhibition presents a century of British design excellence, exploring its far-reaching and enduring influence across the globe.

  • Symbols, Culture, and the Formation of Modernity —Liao Hsiu-Ping: A Retrospective at 90

    3/7(Sun.) - 3/19 (Thu.)
    Mon. - Sun., 9:00 – 17:00
    Dequn Gallery

In the development of modern art in Taiwan, Professor Liao Hsiu-Ping stands as a pivotal figure who cannot be reduced to a single role. He is not only a distinguished artist, but also a devoted art educator and an early pioneer in engaging Taiwan with international art systems. His achievements extend beyond the formation of an individual artistic language, establishing instead a lasting model for the development and transmission of modern printmaking in Taiwan.
Born in Taipei in 1936, Professor Liao graduated in 1959 from the Department of Fine Arts at National Taiwan Normal University. He later pursued advanced studies at Tokyo University of Education (now the University of Tsukuba), the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and Atelier 17, while living and working in New York for an extended period. This trajectory—spanning Tokyo, Paris, and New York—formed a comprehensive modern artistic education shaped by cross-cultural experience. Through this international perspective, Liao was able to rearticulate the possibilities of printmaking as a contemporary medium and introduce to Taiwan a modern knowledge framework aligned with global artistic developments.
We are deeply honored that Professor Liao has accepted the invitation to return to his alma mater to exhibit his work. This gesture not only symbolizes the continuation of artistic and academic legacy, but also reflects the enduring bond between alumnus and institution. Held at Dequn Gallery of the Department of Fine Arts, this 90th Anniversary Retrospective presents a selection of his printmaking works across different periods alongside recent large-scale multi-panel paintings, revealing a sustained exploration of the relationships among symbol, culture, and modernity.
Viewed across decades of artistic creation and pedagogical practice, Professor Liao’s significance for generations of students lies not solely in his artistic accomplishments, but in his establishment of a methodology through which printmaking engages with modernity itself. This contribution has become a foundational cornerstone in the history of modern art in Taiwan—one that remains irreplaceable.
