Standing in Fertile Farmland, Looking Toward The Water—Hydrological History and Water Resources of NTU Main Campus

2023/11/15 (Wed.) ~2024/06/30 (Sun.)
Open on Tue-Sat, 09:00-17:00, closed on Monday, Sunday and national holidays.
Chyun-liu Exhibition Hall, NTU History Gallery

Unfolding ancient maps from the Qing Dynasty and the Japanese colonial period, we find "Ding Neipu Village," where the main campus of National Taiwan University now stands, surrounded by rivers and water channels. At that time, to the southwest of the campus was "Linkou Village," and to the northwest was "Linwei," seemingly the beautiful forest witnessed by the Dutch over 350 years ago. This picturesque forest might have been transformed into cultivated fields through irrigation facilitated by water channels during the Qing Dynasty era. Among the three water channels of the Qing Dynasty, the " LIOUGONG Canal " and the " WULIXUE Canal" flowed through our campus, creating the scenic landscape of intersecting fields and waterways in the Gongguan area.
In 1724, discussions began on the construction of the " WULIXUE Canal." Bringing you back to 300 years ago, we will utilize various ancient maps and old photographs to introduce the historical water channels surrounding the university and the improvements in modern water resource environments. From the past to the present, we will discuss the relationship between the hydrology of the campus area and human activities.
