Who writes on the island? Taiwan literature does not only consist of writings of Taiwanese, as the term refers literally. While Taiwan was under the rule of Japan, Japanese in Taiwan also contributed greatly to Taiwan literature. For example, Shimada Kinji conducted research on Taiwan literature, which has left us significant revelations. The lecture explores into the “real” Shimada Kinji, giving details to his life and achievements from various aspects, especially from the time when he stayed in Taiwan. What Shimada Kinji stands for is the common experience shared by the Japanese staying in Taiwan.
